Person taken into custody after Connecticut university lockdown: mayor

(Reuters) - A person has been taken into custody at Central Connecticut State University on Monday after officials locked down the campus when a suspicious person, possibly armed, was spotted, said New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien.

"The suspect is in custody. Still no reports of injuries," O'Brien told reporters gathered outside the school.

Students and faculty at the school had been ordered to shelter in place since midday as police searched the campus, focusing on James Hall, a dormitory that houses about 400 students.

Citing students, local media said police had searched for a person who appeared to be carrying a gun and what looked like a sword.

Live television images showed large numbers of uniformed police officers responding to the campus.

University officials said their shelter-in-place order remained in place despite the arrest.
